We often undermine the crucial role that a great mentor, leader, or manager plays in shaping our career paths and boosting our morale. Without a supportive manager, workplaces can quickly become monotonous and uninspiring. What great managers do to engage employees can lead to higher productivity and building a positive working environment. They are the linchpins that hold teams together and drive organizational success. In contrast, an ineffective leader creates a toxic work environment that significantly hampers their team’s performance and growth. This blog sheds light on what great managers do differently and highlights the importance of having inspiring leaders.

What Great Managers Do Differently That Sets Them Apart

The impact of an effective leader is not limited to meeting targets and deadlines. They build an environment where employees feel heard, motivated, and empowered to perform at their best. Having a healthy work environment not only boosts individual productivity but also ushers in a culture of collaboration. 

  • Motivate and Empower Teams

Great managers understand the importance of motivating and supporting their team members. Recognizing that motivation is not a one-size-fits-all concept, they tailor their approach to meet individual needs. Regular one-on-one meetings are essential for understanding individual needs and providing personalized support. Investing in skill development ensures that employees have the tools they need to succeed and grow within the organization.

  • Communicate Effectively

Open communication is crucial in any organization. What great managers do is ensure their team is apprised of expectations in their job roles and any changes within the organization. They also encourage open dialogue within the team that helps in creating a safe space where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. By keeping communication channels open, managers can address potential issues before they escalate. Regular updates and communication help to ensure that everyone is on the same page, reducing the chances of conflicts.

  • Recognize and Reward Employees

Rewards and recognition are significant motivators. Many employees feel underappreciated for their hard work and efforts. Recognizing team members' accomplishments is critical to building a successful team. Effective leaders take steps to acknowledge and reward their employees, whether through gratitude, recognition, or other incentives. Employees are more inclined to strive for excellence when they feel that their efforts will not be ignored. This promotes a work atmosphere where all employees are driven to deliver their best.

  • Provide Constructive Feedback 

Constructive feedback is essential for continuous growth and improvement. Great managers provide timely feedback, focusing on both strengths and knowledge or skill gaps. They approach feedback as a tool for learning rather than criticism, helping their team members grow professionally. In contrast, destructive criticism can affect an individual’s self-esteem and often proves counter-productive. By understanding their team’s strengths and weaknesses, managers can optimize productivity and drive better results.

  • Build a Positive Work Environment 

Establishing a welcoming and healthy work atmosphere is essential to the success of any organization. In addition to encouraging collaboration, belongingness, respect, and teamwork, managers are responsible for ensuring everyone feels appreciated and supported. Both employee productivity and well-being are crucial for an organization’s success.

Great managers know that engaging employees is also an effective way to retain talent. When employees’ needs are met and taken care of, they perform consistently and develop loyalty to the organization. They are willing to take on new challenges to help their team grow and thrive. Additionally, great leaders know that their growth is connected to their team’s growth.
