In this era of technological advancements and social media hovering around we are constantly bombarded with information. To add to it, it is the presence of echo chambers that has narrowed our perspectives.
What is an Echo Chamber?
Algorithm-driven recommendations expose us to content with a single point of view or just one way of looking at things. Echo chambers conspire an environment where we are surrounded by people with similar ideas and beliefs, limiting our thinking and hampering innovation.
However, the world outside this echo chamber comprises of people from different blocks of life, with different experiences and backgrounds. Similarly, in work parlance, business leaders may prefer surrounding themselves with like-minded individuals. Individuals who share similar ideologies and values, as it is more comfortable to not be confronted. This approach, however, hampers personal and business growth.
A workplace is just a tiny reflection of the world outside. Echo chambers aside, diverse perspectives are what opens the doors to brainstorming and generating ideas, which then result in the kind of growth and progress that one can experience only when they engage with diverse perspectives, valuable opinions and experiences.
To conclude, different viewpoints bring different points of view that can help organizations become more inclusive. However, they also present challenges because it takes time to get used to new ways of thinking and interacting. By integrating different perspectives in an organization, one creates a culture of collective intelligence that leads to better decisions and outcomes for everyone involved. In our next blog we discuss some measures that organization can execute to build a healthy work environment that includes diversity and inclusion.
