Integration or Disruption? Concerns Around Technology and Existing Culture of Appreciation

April 28, 2025 | SHRM Advisor

Adopting technology will fit into the current system, or will it pose challenges? Industry experts share their perspective on the factors that can be considered when integrating technology with the existing HR metrics.

Anupama Sachdeva Singh, VP- People Solutions- Concentrix, highlighted how technology supports and is a boon in today’s dynamic work milieu.

  • Technology is a powerful enabler of process and programs. One notable benefit is the gamut of choices it offers to employees. By leveraging technology platforms, companies can provide reward points that employees can use for multiple activities, like dining, vacation, shopping etc. Additionally, technology helps collate and analyse employee feedback allowing companies to expand, tailor or refine these choices further.

  • Technology has also revolutionized the recognition process. For instance, a decade ago designing a recognition program, printing thank you cards, and distribution was a cumbersome process. Today, technological advancements allow such tasks to be completed instantly saving time and cost. One can setup program like ‘gratitude week’, provide badges through reward platforms keeping the process quick and seamless and maintaining the concept of instant gratification for all employees at the same time regardless of their location.

  • Technology enables cycle of improvement. Organisations can track employee feedback, action them to revise, expand, change or introduce new programs and monitor utilization based on available analytics. This regular review ensures the effectiveness of recognition program.

Recognition: A Catalyst Driving Team Motivation and Culture of Appreciation

Alok Luthra, Director Total Rewards (Global Delivery Centres) & Global Rewards COE Leader, DXC Technology, asserts that Culture reflects how one relates to the peers within the organization, with the organization as a whole and with the people outside. The biggest contribution as a HR professional is to ‘walk the talk’. HR should ensure there is instant recognition for any good work done. It creates positivity, particularly if the team environment is low

With a good recognition program, metrics can be measured objectively, making it easier to take stock of things that are going well and what needs attention. Celebrate small wins. It motivates the team to take one more step. Another win energizes them. This positive reinforcement circle improves performance. Recognition is a very useful tool to make sure that people are energized, and performance starts going upwards when it’s not at any given time.

AI Driven Insights: Helping Organizations Drive Better Efficiency

The key thing that AI does in today's world is, it helps unlock the power of data. It gives certain indicators which help organisations keep track of the metrics.

With AI HR can integrate multiple data coming from various sources, build up correlations and asses what is impacting the most and course correct what is not working.

AI helps in smarter reporting. Not just regular dashboards but AI can also create much smarter inferences from a raw data. Another thing where AI is of immense help is around personalization. It ensures that people are nudged at the right time, giving personalized recommendations to people to use their benefits.

Generative AI is another great option to enhances user experience in recognition. For instance, writing a hundred citations is very painful and writing the same citation for everybody is just ineffective. Using Generative AI HR can create multiple types of messages which eventually mean the same thing but differently worded, making it personalized. Similarly, creating a badge to recognise an employee’s effort, one would resort to the design team would take few days. With Gen AI badges can be created on the go making recognition instant and meaningful.

Creating Impactful Award and Maintaining Equilibrium: Monetary and Non-monetary awards

To some people at some time monetary award is important for that same person non-monetary award becomes important at a different time. There are sentiments that goes along.

When it comes to non-monetary awards there are plethora of things to choose from as per employee’s preference which help create a fulfilling moment. Non-monetary awards like including employee’s family, where for instance the leadership team writes personalized letter to the family, or a focus on employee mental and physical well-being, like organizing a walkathon or even creating a basket of healthy food options to choose from.  It is all about crafting things as per the needs. All these are becoming equally important. Creating non-monetary awards and retaining them is easy, and a quick thing that can be done.

To Conclude

Technology has helped in streamlining and amplifying the recognition process allowing the employer or HR to focus on more important aspects of the work. With technological support, tasks like reaching out to employees and gathering feedback are automated, sparing time to create special moments that celebrate accomplishments and enables one to design dynamic programs that evolve with changing needs. Technology has completely changed what things were a decade ago from planning to listening, checking and even data collection. It has revolutionized how organizations now focus on employee engagement, making processes much faster, efficient and staying attuned to employee preferences.

Identifying unique needs of today’s multigenerational workforce and using technological assistance to design rewards and recognition programs addressing those needs, yield remarkable results. When organizations build a culture of appreciation the employees feel valued and motivated. Personalized acknowledgement creates an engaged workforce. Leveraging technology to design a sustainable ecosystem, and employee empowerment ensures a meaningful and impactful recognition program in place fostering a culture of appreciation and productivity.
