Community Care Networks: HR and Local Organizations Boost Employee Support

SHRM Advisor

Employees globally aspire to succeed and achieve in their workplaces. Nevertheless, standing beside every prosperous employee lies an uncelebrated hero: the employee support system. These systems furnish a wide array of resources to assist employees in conquering challenges, from bolstering mental well-being to expanding professional networks. Let's delve deeper into how collaborating with local organizations can introduce a new dimension to the employee support system.

Employee Support Systems Are Game-changers in the Modern Workplace

Supporting and taking care of your employees can be overwhelming. It requires a wraparound approach that encompasses different facets of the employee experience. As HR leaders continue to explore more ways to keep employees happy, employee support programs present a great way to improve employees' problem-solving behavior, functionality, and quality of life, as well as their psychological, physical, and mental health.

Your employees are the building blocks of your business’s growth. They can make or break your success. Hence, it makes good business sense to have an employee support program in place to assist employees struggling with certain personal or professional issues. But before you start strengthening the foundations of your employee support system, it's important to understand what it entails, its benefits, and how to implement it properly in your organization.

Introducing: Community Care Networks

There is a profound truth about employee wellness and social networking that is often overlooked. When you help your employees with their overall well-being, even outside of work, you are essentially extending your impact to their family and friends and, in fact, to the community as a whole. The importance of this ripple effect cannot be overemphasized, as it transcends individual success and creates a positive cascade effect that touches the lives of many.

Working with local organizations to enhance employees' overall well-being outside of the company can include access to counseling services, training opportunities, career development, financial support, and other wellness initiatives. This community care network helps employees feel valued and invested in their personal growth while promoting a healthy work-life balance.

Community network groups are based on similar interests or preferences, communities, and identities. Examples include a women's network, a working parents group, caregivers, mothers returning to work, and cultural or ethnic groups.

Community network groups can make you more resilient in times of stress, setbacks, or loss and can make good times even better. Research findings also suggest that social support is significantly related to employee engagement and resilience.

At a time when organizations are leveraging in-house employee assistance programs (EAPs) and employee resource groups (ERGs) to promote employee well-being, community care networks for employees give them the support they need to drive lasting change in the workplace. This supportive relationship can help you think through alternatives, solve problems, and provide more support efficiency than internal systems.

Empowering Employees Through an External Support System

Working with local organizations is a powerful tool for promoting civic culture and empowering communities. By embracing diversity, sharing resources, and working toward common goals, organizations can create a more inclusive and vibrant workplace and society. Two corporate giants  – a software technology establishment and an accounting firm – are betting big on professional networking groups to improve the employee experience and boost their D&I initiatives.

When it comes to working with local organizations to provide employees with a robust support system, there are several important aspects to consider. First, it is crucial to foster strong partnerships and establish effective communication channels between different organizations. This allows for the sharing of ideas, resources, and expertise, ultimately leading to more impactful initiatives. Second, it is important to recognize and respect the unique benefits that each community network brings to employees’ lives. How companies interact with different local organizations or community networks is how these entities will reciprocate.

Build a Workforce that’s Prepared for Whatever the Future Holds

As the world of work continues to evolve faster than ever before, we are witnessing an accelerated shift in employee needs. If the last few years have taught us anything, it's that organizations can't afford to support their employees all by themselves. Employees are struggling with burnout as they try to juggle work and life. And the future still guarantees a dose of uncertainty and unknowns. With a possible recession and economic uncertainty, employee well-being is being put to the test.

But when organizations support employees' needs outside of work, everyone benefits. Programs that support life outside work improve productivity, reduce turnover, and boost employees' morale. Organizations need to recognize the value of such schemes and take steps to implement them wherever possible.

Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace

An organization run by AI is not a futuristic concept. Such technology is already a part of many workplaces and will continue to shape the labor market and HR. Here's how employers and employees can successfully manage generative AI and other AI-powered systems.
