Job Summary:
The Director of Transportation Planning will oversee and coordinate the citys transportation department, including the transportation planning and traffic engineering departments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Hires and trains administrative and professional departmental staff.
- Organizes and oversees the schedules and work of administrative and professional departmental staff.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
- Handles discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with policy.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Leads plan development for transportation-related projects. Assigns qualified staff to execute selected parts of each project.
- Forecasts the citys long-range transportation needs and modifies plans based on current data and trends. Leads and collaborates with stakeholders and transportation team to design a year-by-year program meant to address those needs.
- Oversees engineers engaged in planning and executing current traffic projects.
- Regularly prepares and distributes work-status reports to the mayor and city council.
- Actively participates on regional council for long-range transportation planning as a representative of the city. Coordinates city plans with those long-range goals.
- Develops the budget, in collaboration with citys chief financial officer, necessary to execute the departments responsibilities.
- Provides advice regarding, and accounts for, current use of allocated funds to accounting staff responsible for traffic funding and funding applications.
- Maintains current knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations and available funding.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Organized with attention to detail.
- Excellent managerial skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of community groups including city council, citizens groups, and regional transportation planning council.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation, City Planning, or related field required with at least eight years of experience in transportation planning or traffic engineering and increasing supervisory authority; OR
- Masters degree in related field, with at least six years of experience in transportation planning or traffic engineering and increasing supervisory authority.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
