SHRM Applauds Governor Hochul's Workplace Agenda in State of the State Address

Washington, D.C. — SHRM extends its appreciation for Governor Hochul's commitment to addressing key workplace issues as outlined in her State of the State address on January 9. SHRM commends the governor's prioritization of initiatives focused on mental health services, caregivers, and workforce development.

Governor Hochul's emphasis on expanding access to mental health services and caregivers is recognized by SHRM as a pivotal step in cultivating a healthier and more productive workforce. The proposed workforce development initiatives, particularly those focused on supporting untapped talent pools, such as individuals with disabilities, align with SHRM's mission to promote inclusivity and diversity in the workplace.

SHRM appreciates the governor's dedication to advancing innovation in New York through the ethical and responsible use of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). The creation of the Empire AI consortium is seen by SHRM as a positive step towards harnessing AI's potential to create more dynamic, inclusive, and productive workplaces for both employees and employers.

"SHRM looks forward to exchanging insights and collaborating on effective policy solutions that mutually benefit workers and businesses across the state,” said Emily M. Dickens, SHRM's Chief of Staff and Head of Public Affairs.

In a demonstration of this commitment, SHRM will bring over four dozen HR professionals to Albany for its 2024 New York State Advocacy Day on January 30th. These business leaders, from myriad industries and backgrounds, will convene to directly engage with legislators, key staff and appointees on workplace issues impacting work, workers and workplaces in New York.

“We look forward to a fruitful partnership with Governor Hochul and her Administration, working towards policies that support the lives and livelihoods of employers and employees in the state of New York,” said Dickens.
