SHRM-Backed Legislation Heads to New York Governor
As mentioned in a previous edition of SHRM HR Policy Briefing, SHRM and the SHRM New York State Council advocated for several bills before the New York State Legislature, including Senate Bill 4358. This bill, sponsored by state Sen. Jamaal T. Bailey, would expand the state’s veterans tuition awards program to allow the transfer of unused benefits to a spouse, survivor, or child. This legislation aligns with SHRM’s advocacy on behalf of pools of untapped talent, such as veterans, who provide unique value to organizations willing to make the effort to seek them out. The bill passed both chambers and is waiting for Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign or veto it. It is unclear when Hochul will make her decision.
