SHRM Expresses Concern About NYC Council Legislation
The New York City Council’s Committee on Civil and Human Rights was scheduled in August to hold a hearing on Int. 808, which would expand the information employers must provide in job listings. Prior to the hearing, SHRM Chief of Staff, Head of Government Affairs, and Corporate Secretary Emily M. Dickens, J.D., expressed SHRM’s concerns about the legislation in a phone call to the committee’s chair and a follow-up letter to the bill’s sponsor, Councilmember Nantasha Williams.
SHRM is committed to advancing pay practices that are fair, transparent, and sustainable to strengthen workers and workplaces. However, SHRM was concerned that the legislation, as currently drafted, would not reach its desired outcomes and would place undue burdens on employers and employees.
SHRM is committed to elevating the experience and expertise of its membership to ensure that public policies around pay transparency are feasible from an administrative standpoint, safeguard employee and business data, and complement, rather than contradict, federal requirements.
