Running on Empty: How Leadership Development is Failing Leader Wellbeing and What to Do About It

Leadership burnout has reached a tipping point. With 56% of leaders reporting burnout in 2024 and trust in managers falling 37% in just two years, the data points to a system under serious strain. The problem isn't workload or resources, it's design.

Most leadership development programs are built around competencies: what leaders know and what they can do. They have almost nothing to say about who leaders are becoming in the process. And that gap between performance and personhood is precisely where burnout begins.

In the Keynote Session for SHRM's 2026 Mental Health & Wellness Virtual Retreat, this session introduces Linkage's Purposeful Leadership® Model as a framework to support leader wellbeing, giving HR professionals a new language for conversations that competency frameworks were never built to have.

    Sarah Bettman

    Sarah Bettman is a Principal Consultant at Linkage, a SHRM company, and is an integral part of the team responsible for developing and delivering SHRM Linkage programs globally. Sarah’s expertise includes consulting, facilitation, public speaking and coaching with over 20 years in organizational and leadership development for clients around the world. She is known as a trusted advisor and coach on the topics of leadership development, advancing women, and diversity, equity and inclusion. Her style is deeply rooted in her values of integrity and authenticity, and she brings forward her experiences with passion and humor that ignite engagement, creating traction where there wasn’t any before. 

    She has held key roles leading diversity & inclusion and leadership development efforts internally at Kaiser Permanente and Constellation Brands, both Linkage clients, and as the founder of her own leadership development consultancy. Since 2014, she has been instrumental as faculty at SHRM Linkage’s Institute where she serves as a facilitator, coach, Lead Learning Team Leader, in addition to leading her own Learning Team.

    Sarah holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Colorado and an MBA in Strategic Leadership from Dominican University of California. She is a Certified Co-Active Coach (CPCC), Certified Organization and Relationship Systems Coach (ORSC-C), and certified wellness coach.
