When Managers Become First Responders: Role Clarity in a High-Stress Workplace

This webinar examines how the manager role has grown more emotionally complex, what signs of strain and role drift look like, and where support structures have not always kept pace with the changing role. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of why managers are often the first point of contact for employee distress, conflict, and performance concerns, along with practical guidance on what managers should handle, where HR should step in, and when referral or escalation may be appropriate. The session is designed to give participants a more usable framework for supporting both managers and employees with greater clarity, consistency, and confidence.

    Matthew Pambid

    Matthew Pambid, MSW, is a psychotherapist and consultant with over 30 years of experience in mental health practice. As moderator for this webinar, he brings deep expertise in connecting mental health principles to workplace realities, helping frame conversations in ways that are relevant to employees, managers, and organizational wellbeing.

    Haley Shier, MSW, PMP, is a Senior Account Manager with Ulliance, Inc. who brings a thoughtful, people‑first approach to her work. With a background in social work, crisis intervention, learning and development, and project management, she enjoys partnering with organizations to manage complex accounts and deliver meaningful workforce solutions. Haley works closely with leaders and clients to ensure services are aligned with business goals and employee needs, while creating programs that support employee engagement, mitigate risk, and strengthen workplace culture.

    Fran Wilson

    Fran Wilson is a dedicated behavioral health professional whose career spans more than two decades of empowering individuals and organizations to create meaningful, positive change. Throughout her professional journey from clinical counseling roles to gender responsive consulting—she has remained deeply committed to helping people improve their emotional health, strengthen resilience, and navigate life challenges to help them move toward healthier and more fulfilling lives.

    Currently, Fran works as an Account Director with Ulliance, and supports multiple accounts to promote workplace wellness and support employees’ personal and professional well‑being. Her earlier work as a counselor, therapist, gender-responsive substance use trainer,  and clinical supervisor included providing individual, group, and family therapy; facilitating addiction recovery; supporting mental health treatment; and guiding clients through moments of crisis and transition.

    Fran holds both a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology from Howard University and a Post‑Master's Certificate in Clinical Community Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. She is licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and previously was a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC). She is committed to fostering growth, healing, and positive transformation to shape her work with individuals, families, and organizations alike.

    Thomas Tilton

    Thomas Tilton is an Account Director with Ulliance, Inc., as well as a licensed therapist in the state of Michigan with more than 10 years' experience in clinical/mental health counseling and human services. He is a SHRM-Certified Professional. In his current role, Thomas provides leadership and HR consultations on behavioral health concerns that arise in the workplace. He also provides crisis consultation and support, and partners with HR leaders on promoting well-being and mental health awareness.
