Quick Hits in AI News: From Voice Agents to AI’s Emotional Impact

March 27, 2025 | Nichol Bradford

Each week, as SHRM’s executive in residence for AI+HI, I scour the media landscape to bring you expert summaries of the biggest AI headlines — and what they mean for you and your business.

1. Emboldened by Trump, AI Companies Lobby for Fewer Rules

What to Know:

Since President Donald Trump made AI dominance a national priority, companies such as OpenAI, Meta, and Google are pushing for fewer regulations. They’ve asked the government to block state AI laws, allow the use of copyrighted materials for training, ease access to federal data and energy, and endorse open-source models. The goal is to outpace China, but critics warn this could lead to more bias, misinformation, and public harm.

Why It Matters:

With fewer regulations, HR teams may face greater responsibility to ensure AI used in hiring and workforce tools is ethical and unbiased. Companies will need to build internal safeguards to manage risk and maintain trust.

2. OpenAI Unveils New Audio Models to Make AI Agents Sound More Human Than Ever

What to Know:

OpenAI released advanced audio models that improve voice interactions. The new GPT-4o-transcribe and GPT-4o-mini-transcribe outperform earlier versions in accuracy across languages and noisy settings. The GPT-4o-mini-tts model allows developers to control tone and emotion. With updates to the Agents SDK, developers can quickly upgrade text agents into voice agents with minimal effort.

Why It Matters:

As voice agents become more natural and customizable, HR teams may see new uses in employee support, training, and recruiting. These tools enhance user experience but raise questions about trust and transparency. HR leaders should prepare for AI communication that feels increasingly human.

3. OpenAI Explores ChatGPT’s Emotional Impact on Users

What to Know:

OpenAI and MIT Media Lab studied how ChatGPT affects emotional well-being, analyzing 40 million interactions and surveying over 4,000 users, plus holding a four-week trial with nearly 1,000 participants. Most users don’t engage emotionally, but a small subset uses ChatGPT like a companion app, spending up to 30 minutes a day with it. Users who bonded more with the chatbot reported greater loneliness and emotional dependency. Women reported lower social engagement than men, and those using a voice mode of a different gender experienced higher loneliness.

Why It Matters:

As AI tools become more common, HR leaders must consider how emotionally engaging chatbots affect employee well-being and social connection. This research shows potential risks of AI overuse, especially among more emotionally engaged users. Companies using AI for internal tools should expect similar emotional impacts.

4. Why Handing Over Total Control to AI Agents Would Be a Huge Mistake

What to Know:

AI agents are being developed to act independently — making decisions, executing tasks, and adjusting behavior over time. While this appears promising for automation and productivity, experts are warning that fully autonomous agents may lead to dangerous outcomes. Without human oversight, these systems can become unpredictable, propagate bias, or take actions that are misaligned with human values. Critics argue that entrusting AI with total control invites risk, especially when deployed at scale.

Why It Matters:

HR and business leaders must be cautious when integrating autonomous AI agents into workflows. Fully handing over responsibility could lead to ethical breaches, safety concerns, or reputational damage. To safeguard employees and customers, organizations should prioritize human-in-the-loop systems, set clear boundaries for AI decision-making, and develop oversight mechanisms that prevent unintended consequences.

5. AI Agents and the Hybrid Organization: 3 Insights from Microsoft

What to Know:

Microsoft HR executive Christopher J. Fernandez outlines three major shifts for organizations adopting AI agents. First, companies must treat talent as a continuum of human and digital workers, with AI acting as a bridge across skills and knowledge gaps. Second, employees are becoming “cognitive tool builders,” creating their own AI tools to extend mastery. Third, AI allows organizations to evolve from rigid bureaucracies to fluid “knowledge gardens,” where expertise is shared organically through empowered citizen developers.

Why It Matters:

For HR leaders, Fernandez’s insights signal a major shift in how talent is defined, developed, and organized. Enabling employees to create and share AI tools will require new frameworks for training, governance, and performance evaluation. The future workforce will include AI agents as co-workers — and HR must design systems that support collaboration, transparency, and innovation across both human and digital talent.
