Job Summary:
The Freight Forwarder will determine and arrange the best means of transport for specified goods and products based on delivery requirements, costs, and routing options.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Calculates the cost of goods to be moved including based on weight and volume.
- Explains transportation factors such as shipping options, transfers, regulations, and timelines, to clients.
- Coordinates arrangements for additional services such as inland transportation or storage as requested.
- Prepares all documentation needed for shipping including bills of lading, packing lists, dock receipts, certificates of origin, and invoices.
- Negotiates handling costs, contracts, and transportation.
- Oversees proper packaging and labeling of goods to be transported.
- Selects optimal shipping route based on nature of goods being shipped, security needs, and transit times.
- Manages shipping costs by combining loads with a common destination.
- Maintains records of goods dispatched or received.
- Notifies exporters, consignees, or insurers of shipment status.
- Schedules payment and other charges or collection of payment on behalf of client.
- Maintains thorough understanding of regulations and laws affecting international transport of cargo.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of principles and methods for moving goods by air, train, sea, or land.
- Thorough understanding of clerical needs, policies, and processes involved in freight transport.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent spatial and problem-solving skills as needed to combine and plan shipments.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma required; Associates degree or some relevant college coursework preferred.
- Prior experience preferred.
- Accreditation may be required for customs and international transactions.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
