Job Summary:
The Machine Crater and Packer will prepare machinery and/or parts for safe and effective shipment by wrapping, crating, rustproofing, and boxing the items as appropriate.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assembles boxes, skids, crates, or platforms used for shipping equipment and machine parts.
- Plans and builds or assembles the most effective crating method for new or unusual items.
- Builds or otherwise prepares bracing and other support needed for safe transportation via transport truck or railroad car.
- Uses forklift to load and place heavy machinery on skids or blocks.
- Secures machinery or parts to skids by using appropriate packing materials including wood crossbars and metal strapping.
- Applies and/or provides adequate rust protection coatings or materials to machinery and parts to ensure safety during shipping.
- Labels crates and boxes with necessary shipping and identification information.
- Manages and maintains lumber and crating materials inventory.
- Completes requisition forms and reorders materials as necessary or designated.
- Repairs pallets and skids as time allows.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Dependable and independent worker.
- Proficient with simple hand tools and power saw.
- Ability to follow directions and adhere to safety protocols.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or other software as needed to prepare labels for shipment.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Plant experience highly preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to move in a variety of ways including standing, squatting, stretching, and bending, as needed to build large crates and platforms.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to regularly lift 20-pound items.
