Administration Releases National AI Framework; SHRM Highlights Workplace Implications
On March 20, 2026, the Administration released a national legislative framework outlining six key recommendations to guide Congress as it considers the future of federal artificial intelligence (AI) policy. While the framework does not carry the force of law, it provides insight into the Administration’s priorities and signals a continued focus on developing a more coordinated national approach to AI governance.
In an official statement, SHRM noted that "the White House has set a clear direction: accelerate AI innovation, expand access, and prepare the workforce. SHRM supports this approach and recognizes that AI is already transforming how work gets done across industries." Across industries, AI is becoming more integrated into functions such as hiring, workforce planning, training, and operations.
As AI adoption continues to grow, employers play an important role in supporting upskilling and reskilling efforts to help workers adapt to new technologies. Organizations are also continuing to focus on responsible AI use, including transparency, human oversight, and thoughtful implementation in workplace practices.
SHRM continues to engage on AI policy with a focus on workplace considerations, including the importance of clarity, flexibility, and practical implementation. As SHRM Leadership often notes, “AI + HI = ROI,” emphasizing the value of combining technology with human judgment in workplace decision-making.
SHRM also provides resources to support employers as they navigate AI adoption, including research, toolkits, and guidance available through its Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace hub.
As discussions around federal AI policy continue, SHRM remains engaged in monitoring developments and supporting HR professionals and business leaders in understanding the potential workplace impacts.
