HR's Voice in Action: SHRM's August In-District Advocacy Campaign


Every August, when members of Congress return to their home districts, SHRM Members step forward to ensure HR's voice is heard. For the past five years, the August In-District Advocacy Campaign has been a hallmark of SHRM's advocacy strategy and an annual tradition that empowers HR professionals to engage directly with lawmakers. This year, SHRM Members once again rose to the occasion, proving that when it comes to shaping workplace policy, personal engagement makes all the difference.


Why It Matters

Policy decisions in Washington, D.C., directly shape the world of work, including how organizations harness new technologies, how families balance work and caregiving, and how students prepare for the jobs of tomorrow. Engaging with lawmakers in their home districts allows SHRM Members to put a human face on these issues, making it clear that workplace policy is not abstract — it affects every sector, every business, and every worker. Over the past five years, this annual campaign has built a powerful track record of showing Congress that HR is an essential partner in advancing practical workforce solutions.


Advocacy That Resonates

This year's campaign reached nearly 100 lawmakers across party lines with one consistent message: HR professionals are trusted partners in shaping policy that works. Covering health care, higher education, nonprofits, and local governments, SHRM Members represented a true cross-section of the workforce. Each sector has unique challenges but united as one HR voice advocating for practical solutions. That unity, demonstrated year after year, continues to strengthen SHRM's credibility with policymakers.

Policy Focus: Education, Caregiving, and AI

This year, SHRM Members elevated three urgent priorities during their meetings with members of Congress:

  • Fixing the Education-to-Employment Pipeline: Building stronger connections between classrooms and careers to prepare a workforce that is ready for tomorrow's jobs. 

  • Supporting Caregivers in the Workforce: Modernizing workplace laws so employers can better support working families and improve retention. 

  • Responsible AI in the Workplace: Promoting policies that encourage artificial intelligence innovation while protecting workers against displacement.

By combining SHRM's research and resources with compelling member stories, these conversations helped lawmakers see the workplace through the eyes of HR. 


Building Momentum

The August In-District Advocacy Campaign has become a cornerstone of SHRM's advocacy efforts — and for good reason. Over five years, it has shown that when HR professionals engage directly with policymakers, they not only raise awareness of the challenges facing employers and employees, but also influence the solutions that shape the workplace.
