SHRM Celebrates Excellence in Leadership at the 2026 Democracy Awards
SHRM Chief Administrative Officer Emily M. Dickens joined congressional leaders at the Congressional Management Foundation's (CMF) 9th Annual Democracy Awards to present the Excellence in Congressional Management Award, recognizing offices that demonstrate exceptional organizational leadership, workplace culture, staff development, and operational excellence.
Dickens highlighted the important connection between effective workplace management and effective governance. She noted that the same leadership principles that drive high-performing organizations—clear communication, professional development, accountability, and strong workplace culture—are equally critical to successful congressional offices.
This year's recipients reflected those values. Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA) was recognized for fostering a people-first culture through intentional leadership, cross-office collaboration, professional development, and structured communication that empowers staff across both Washington and district offices. Representative Greg Stanton (D-AZ) was honored for his innovative organizational design, performance-driven management approach, and commitment to building a collaborative, high-performing workplace that encourages accountability while elevating employee engagement.
The Democracy Awards are CMF's premier bipartisan recognition program, honoring Democratic and Republican congressional offices through an independent, competitive review process focused on management excellence, constituent service, innovation, and institutional effectiveness. By recognizing best practices in organizational leadership, the awards help strengthen congressional performance and reinforce public trust in government.
