Quick Hits in AI News: AI's Productivity Effects

February 19, 2026 | Nichol Bradford

Each week, as SHRM's executive in residence for AI+HI, I scour the media landscape to bring you expert summaries of the biggest artificial intelligence headlines — and what they mean for you and your business.

Specialty Credential: AI+HI

After years of investment and uneven returns, AI's productivity effects are beginning to show up in firm-level data. But the gains are not uniform, and they are not costless. Case studies, economic reporting, and new research point to a common pattern: execution compresses first, while judgment, oversight, and learning become more central. This week's stories trace how AI's impact moves from output metrics to organizational design to human reasoning — and now into workforce policy.

1. The AI Productivity Surge Is Finally Visible

What to Know:

The Financial Times reports that measurable AI-driven productivity gains are appearing in corporate data after years of limited visible impact. Analysts cite improved output per worker in technology, professional services, and finance, where AI supports coding, data analysis, and administrative tasks. Executives report faster execution, shorter development cycles, and reduced hiring as systems absorb repetitive work. Economists caution gains remain uneven and concentrated among early adopters, and national productivity data has yet to fully reflect the shift. Much of the impact is occurring at the firm and task level rather than in broad employment numbers.

Why It Matters:

AI's economic effects are starting to register in output data, but the gains are localized and design-dependent. Productivity improvements are appearing before large-scale job losses, reinforcing the pattern of task reallocation rather than wholesale displacement.

One company's rollout shows what those gains look like in practice.

2. What Klarna Learned from Its Ambitious AI Rollout

What to Know:

Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski said the company's aggressive AI deployment replaced the equivalent of roughly 850 customer-support roles and contributed to a 50% workforce reduction through attrition since 2022. The AI agent now handles 95% of customer service inquiries. However, Klarna found that human interaction remains valuable for complex or relationship-driven work. The company is shifting toward a model where AI manages routine tasks while humans focus on high-touch support, business development, and strategic roles. Revenue per employee has increased significantly since 2022, rising from about $300,000 to $1.3 million. Siemiatkowski also emphasized that executives must model AI use themselves and redesign workflows rather than treat AI as a plug-in tool.

Why It Matters:

Klarna's experience shows both the scale and limits of automation. AI can drive substantial efficiency gains, but durable value depends on redefining human roles around relationships, judgment, and oversight rather than removing people entirely.

Early surges often follow a familiar transition curve.

3. The Productivity J-Curve of AI Adoption

What to Know:

This essay argues that early AI adoption follows a J-curve: productivity initially appears flat or negative before gains compound. In early phases, teams experiment with tools, incur coordination costs, and produce uneven outputs requiring review. As workflows are redesigned and fluency increases, efficiency and quality improve. Execution tasks compress first, while judgment, sequencing, and evaluation grow in importance. Organizations that treat AI as plug-in automation stall; those that restructure processes move beyond the trough.

Why It Matters:

Short-term stagnation in AI returns does not signal failure. It reflects transition costs. Durable gains depend on redesigning work around human judgment and iterative learning rather than measuring success solely through early output metrics.

That transition is not only organizational — it is cognitive.

4. U.S. Department of Labor Releases AI Literacy Framework

What to Know:

The U.S. Department of Labor issued an AI Literacy Framework to guide workforce preparation for AI-enabled jobs. It defines AI literacy as foundational competencies for using and evaluating AI responsibly, emphasizing generative systems. The framework outlines five core content areas — understanding principles, exploring uses, directing AI, evaluating outputs, and responsible use — and seven delivery principles, including experiential learning, contextual integration, complementary human skills, structured pathways, and agile updates. The guidance is voluntary but aligns with the administration's AI Action Plan and America's Talent Strategy.

Why It Matters:

Federal workforce policy is shifting from abstract AI readiness to structured literacy standards. The framework signals that baseline AI competence — paired with human judgment and accountability — is becoming a national workforce priority rather than an optional technical skill.

As reasoning shifts, workforce policy is beginning to adjust.

5. Thinking — Fast, Slow, and Artificial: How AI Is Reshaping Human Reasoning

What to Know:

This paper introduces "Tri-System Theory," adding AI ("System 3") to traditional dual-process models of reasoning. Across three preregistered experiments (N=1,372; 9,593 trials), participants frequently consulted an AI assistant when solving Cognitive Reflection Test problems. When AI responses were accurate, accuracy rose; when faulty, performance fell below baseline, demonstrating "cognitive surrender" — uncritical adoption of AI output. The effect size was large (Cohen’s h ≈ 0.82) and persisted under time pressure and incentives. Higher trust in AI increased surrender, while fluid intelligence and need for cognition reduced it. AI use also increased confidence, even when wrong.

Why It Matters:

AI is not just augmenting reasoning; it is restructuring it. As external "System 3" cognition becomes embedded in decision-making, accuracy increasingly tracks AI quality rather than internal deliberation. The risk is not automation alone, but a shift in agency and accountability as users defer judgment to algorithmic outputs.
