There’s no shortage of trending topics in the total rewards space, including mental and financial health, retirement readiness, and family-friendly benefits.

But one topic in particular has been on many HR pros’ minds as of late: pay equity. Amid the passage of legislation around pay transparency and growing calls for more equal pay practices and better pay reporting, many organizations have been trying to make sense of the growing focus.

At the SHRM Annual Conference & Expo 2024, there are plenty of sessions to help attendees better understand pay equity—how to practice it, what tools to use, how it affects employee well-being, and what to know about regulatory developments and the potential implications of the 2024 U.S. presidential election for the future of pay equity.

Here’s a look at sessions that can help HR pros and other company leaders build their skills with pay equity. All times are Central time.

Monday, June 24

Global Pay Strategies: How to Compensate Your International Employees Effectively and Equitably
11 a.m.-noon
Presenter: John A. Rubino, president of Rubino Consulting Services

Rubino will discuss leading-edge compensation solutions, the factors that impact mobility decisions, and the necessary techniques for organizations to pay their global workforce equitably. Participants will also come away with a real-world global schematic of compensation and total rewards perspectives, methodologies, and approaches that are practiced in premier international organizations.

Presenter: Chris Dohrmann, executive director of strategic partnerships at Global Shares, a J.P. Morgan Company

This session will dive into the year’s top compensation trends, regulatory updates, and pay transparency and equity. Discussing these trends can help attendees enhance their recruitment processes to attract key talent.

Beyond a Paycheck: Pay Equity’s Unexpected Impact on Employee Well-Being

Presenter: Nicole Armstrong, founder and CEO of Ellequate

Pay equity can help employers in their recruitment and retention journey, but it can also have another positive effect: improved employee well-being.

Armstrong will talk about how pay transparency—a cornerstone of pay equity—impacts employee well-being. Attendees will get a better sense of pay transparency and how to effectively implement it, discover actionable insights for promoting pay equity beyond pay practices, and find out how to align their compensation philosophy and values to create a workplace that works for everyone.

Market Competitiveness and Internal Equity: Striking the Right Balance in Your Compensation Programs

Attend this session to gain a broader awareness of practices that can expose organizational risk, learn strategies that will strengthen your pay programs, and find out how to comply with U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), and state law standards. Global Pay Equity: A Tour Around the World
2-3 p.m.
Presenter: William David Wright, partner at Fisher & Phillips LLP

This session will help HR professionals navigate the challenging demands of pay equity laws around the world. Comparisons will be made between the litigation-based North American model and the reporting-based European model by using specific examples from the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, the U.K., Australia, Japan, and China.
