Future-Proofing Talent with SHRM’s Competency Assessment Framework
As organisations navigate rapid technological change and shifting workforce expectations, understanding current and future skill requirements has become a strategic need. With AI and automation redefining job roles at an unprecedented pace, many organisations struggle to accurately identify the competencies their workforce currently possesses and the capabilities they will need to succeed in the future. SHRM’s Competency Assessment Framework addresses this challenge by providing organisations with a structured, data-driven approach to evaluating and developing both technical and behavioural competencies. Once the right set of competencies are mapped, whether it be for hiring, upskilling or internal mobility, assessment of technical, behavioural or leadership competencies done in an objective and seamless manner creates high business impact for organisations.
This framework was recently deployed in partnership with a GCC federal HR authority, targeting HR leaders across government entities in the country. It aimed to assess leadership competencies and capabilities, with outputs directly informing a customized, future skills–focused leadership journey.
The SHRM Competency Assessment Framework begins with a diagnostic phase, where organisations conduct a deep dive into job descriptions, competency requirements, role realities, and leadership expectations. This ensures that talent development strategies are aligned with both current organisational priorities and future workforce needs.
Next, customized and validated assessment tools are developed. Built from a repository of more than 5,000 competencies across over 12 industries and 6,000 roles, these tools leverage globally validated psychometric methods and practical exercises to assess employee capabilities with accuracy and credibility.
The framework also includes platform and implementation setup, where assessments are piloted, workflows are finalized, and reporting formats are designed. Assessments can be deployed across multiple languages, including Arabic, English, French, and Mandarin, ensuring accessibility for global organisations.
Once deployed, the go-live phase enables organisations to launch assessments, support execution, and generate comprehensive talent profile reports. These insights provide leaders with a clear understanding of workforce strengths, capability gaps, and development priorities.
Finally, feedback sessions provide both individual and group-level insights, enabling employees to better understand their skill profiles and identify opportunities for growth and career development.
Research from firms such as McKinsey and Gartner highlights that organisations using structured skills assessments are significantly better positioned to close capability gaps, align learning investments with business priorities, and build agile, future-ready workforces. By turning uncertainty into actionable insight, SHRM’s Competency Assessment Framework empowers organisations to make informed talent decisions and build the capabilities needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world of work.
