Ask Johnny: Could My Work Opinions on LinkedIn Hurt My Career?

August 26, 2026 | Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP

SHRM President and Chief Executive Officer Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, answers your workplace questions each week. Do you have a work-related question you’d like him to answer? Submit it here.

I’ve been posting more openly on LinkedIn about burnout, toxic management, and frustrations at work, and the posts get a lot of support. But now I’m wondering if future employers might see me as negative or difficult. Can being honest about workplace problems on social media hurt my career?

—Elias

Yes, it can. Every post you make contributes to your professional reputation. Employers don’t just review your résumé anymore. Many also look at your public social media presence to better understand your judgment, professionalism, and how you engage with others.

That doesn’t mean you should avoid discussing workplace issues altogether. Quite the opposite. Honest conversations about burnout, ineffective leadership, workplace culture, and employee well-being are important. This very column exists because thoughtful conversations about work help people learn, grow, and build better workplaces.

The difference is how you approach those conversations.

Before you post, ask yourself why you’re sharing. Are you offering insight, helping others navigate a challenge, or contributing to a broader discussion? Or are you simply venting frustration? Those may feel similar in the moment, but they leave very different impressions.

There’s also an important distinction between discussing workplace issues broadly and publicly criticizing a specific employer. Sharing lessons learned or advocating for better workplaces can demonstrate thoughtfulness and leadership. Repeatedly calling out current or former employers, however, may cause prospective employers to question your judgment and discretion. Fair or not, they may wonder whether they’ll eventually become the subject of your next post.

Of course, you have every right to share your opinions. But rights and consequences are two different things. Some employers may appreciate your candor. Others may decide your online presence suggests you’re more focused on grievances than solutions. You don’t get to control how people interpret what you post.

My advice is simple: Build the kind of professional brand that opens doors rather than closes them. If you’re going to speak publicly about workplace challenges, do it in a way that informs, teaches, or advances the conversation. Leave people with solutions, not just frustrations.

Your reputation is built one interaction at a time, and today, that includes every post you share.
