U.S. employers reported adding 57,000 jobs in June, less than expected, and the unemployment rate dipped to 4.2%, according to the latest employment report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Employment trended up in professional and business services, and health care. Employment in leisure and hospitality surprisingly declined, given the possible boost from the World Cup. Seasonal hiring has been weaker than usual this year.
June’s revisions reveal that employment in April and May combined is 74,000 jobs lower than previously reported. In separate data, job openings are higher than anticipated, but hiring overall remains muted and job seekers are still finding it difficult to find new opportunities.
