Job Summary:
The Superintendent of Special Education will administer, coordinate, and lead the special education program for the school system.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Interviews, hires, and oversees special education teachers and program staff.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develops and executes a special education program that focuses on integration, inclusion, and learning opportunities for all students.
- Coordinates the activities of and provides leadership to special education teachers and support staff.
- Ensures that policies and procedures are implemented and performed in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Drafts, maintains, and implements policies and procedures for every aspect of a successful special education program including evaluation, placement, and individualized education and training.
- Meets and collaborates with departmental staff on a regular basis to assess progress of programs and initiatives, participates in short and long-range planning, and addresses and resolves problems.
- Communicates with parents, caregivers, and other stakeholders to explain educational programs and to answer questions.
- Builds and maintains relationships in the community to foster understanding of and support for special education programs.
- Drafts, proposes, and presents budgets and reports to the school board.
- Attends and participates in regular school board meetings.
- Maintains current knowledge of laws and regulations related to special education.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Outstanding managerial and leadership skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with students, staff, parents and government officials.
- Ability to negotiate with people with different or opposing viewpoints.
- Thorough understanding of pedagogy and various implementation options.
- Thorough understanding of best practices related to special education.
- Thorough understanding of laws and regulations related to special education.
Education and Experience:
- Masters degree in Education required; Doctorate preferred.
- At least five years of experience in special education required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
