Job Summary:

The Superintendent of Special Education will administer, coordinate, and lead the special education program for the school system.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Interviews, hires, and oversees special education teachers and program staff.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes a special education program that focuses on integration, inclusion, and learning opportunities for all students.
  • Coordinates the activities of and provides leadership to special education teachers and support staff.
  • Ensures that policies and procedures are implemented and performed in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Drafts, maintains, and implements policies and procedures for every aspect of a successful special education program including evaluation, placement, and individualized education and training.
  • Meets and collaborates with departmental staff on a regular basis to assess progress of programs and initiatives, participates in short and long-range planning, and addresses and resolves problems.
  • Communicates with parents, caregivers, and other stakeholders to explain educational programs and to answer questions.
  • Builds and maintains relationships in the community to foster understanding of and support for special education programs.
  • Drafts, proposes, and presents budgets and reports to the school board.
  • Attends and participates in regular school board meetings.
  • Maintains current knowledge of laws and regulations related to special education.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Outstanding managerial and leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with students, staff, parents and government officials.
  • Ability to negotiate with people with different or opposing viewpoints.
  • Thorough understanding of pedagogy and various implementation options.
  • Thorough understanding of best practices related to special education.
  • Thorough understanding of laws and regulations related to special education.

Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree in Education required; Doctorate preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in special education required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
