Job Summary:
The Patient Accounts Supervisor will manage the staff assigned to bill and collect patient accounts.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Trains, directs, and motivates employees; manages staff assignments, and work and vacation schedules.
- Develops and administers training and guidance programs; participates in solution of disciplinary problems; and counsels staff members.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Confers with management in the identification of problems, the development of policies and procedures, and the formulation of workload production standards.
- Coordinates billing and collections work with that of other departments, and with public and private agencies, and individuals regarding monies owed.
- Monitors and translates billing information and changes.
- Reviews and analyzes billing and collections work to ensure quality of performance and compliance with standards.
- Researches and verifies problems or challenges generated by centralized computer pricing.
- Serves as a backup for patient accounts clerks.
- Processes complex accounts or works closely with and makes recommendations to subordinates confronted with unusual situations.
- Participates in the selection and performance evaluation of staff.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles of supervision.
- Knowledge of various types of health insurance such as state and federal Medicare, and other third-party reimbursors.
- Knowledge how to verify insurance coverage, personal earnings and assets, and the debtors ability to meet obligation.
- Knowledge of health care billing practices; automated billing and accounting systems; collection laws, regulations, and techniques.
- Ability to plan, schedule, assign, coordinate, and evaluate the work of department staff; train staff; read, interpret, and apply policies and procedures.
- Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, superiors, and others.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Education and Experience:
- Four years of increasingly responsible clerical experience with some supervisory responsibility and public contact including two years of medical billing, insurance, or related duties, preferably in a health facility, or;
- Two years experience performing duties equivalent to patient accounts clerk, and some supervisory and public contact experience, or;
- Equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
