Lauren Nicole Twerdak is an emerging human resources professional serving as the Human Resources Manager at the Humane Society of Yuma, where she manages HR operations for Yuma County’s only animal shelter, supporting over 6,500 animals annually. With HR experience, Lauren has demonstrated a talent for developing compliant HR policies, leading full-cycle recruitment, and fostering an inclusive workplace culture through employee training and engagement initiatives. Her creative strategies, such as introducing daily staff huddles and monthly check-ins, have strengthened team collaboration and morale. By integrating modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, Lauren enhances HR processes to improve efficiency, ensure compliance, and support organizational goals. Her earlier roles in people management and recruitment, including her position as Student Recruitment & Enrollment Manager at IDEA Public Schools, provided a strong foundation in the strategic value of HR for building cohesive, diverse teams.
As a Native American (Choctaw and Cherokee), LGBTQ+ ally, and the spouse of an Army veteran, Lauren is deeply committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. Her contributions extend through her consultancy, Say When LLC, where she offers HR guidance to small businesses and supports aspiring HR professionals. An active member of the Southwestern Arizona Human Resource Association (SAHRA), Lauren engages with peers to stay informed on industry trends and best practices. Her dedication to growth is also evident in her regular participation in webinars, keeping her attuned to evolving HR strategies.
Lauren holds a Master of Arts in Public & Organizational Relations from Montclair State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism & Media Studies from Rutgers University (Cum Laude). Her achievements include creating effective training programs and optimizing recruitment processes in nonprofit settings, despite navigating resource-constrained environments.
Receiving the HR Tomorrow Leadership Program award is a significant milestone for Lauren, recognizing her potential to shape the future of HR. She is eager to utilize the program’s resources, including SHRM’s conferences and networking opportunities, to enhance her leadership skills and inspire others. Lauren aims to take on a leadership role within SAHRA, contributing to a more diverse and innovative HR community while supporting the next generation of HR professionals.
