Veterans at Work Certificate Open for Registration

SHRM Foundation’s free educational program encourages hiring vets, earns participants 10 PDCs

​The SHRM Foundation's new Veterans at Work Certificate Program is now open to all HR professionals. This free, educational program, sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal, is part of the SHRM Foundation's commitment to building more-inclusive workplaces and focuses on best practices for attracting, hiring and retaining veterans.

Participants in the program must complete several components, including content review, online training, brief quizzes and two short surveys. SHRM certification is not required to sign up for the course, though SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential-holders who complete the program may be awarded 10 professional development credits (PDCs) toward recertification.

The certificate program officially launched Nov. 14 at SHRM's Volunteer Leaders' Summit, which gave inclusion captains—HR professionals trained to lead programming, discussions and activities to inspire and educate professionals in their communities—the first look at the Veterans at Work program. They heard from program partners, such as the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, about the value that skilled veterans bring to the civilian workplace and how to engage and integrate these talented professionals into their organizations. The USAA Foundation sponsored the event.

The Veterans at Work program's main learning segment is based on a new guidebook, The Recruitment, Hiring, Retention & Engagement of Military Veterans, by Deborah Bradbard and James Schmeling (SHRM Foundation, 2018). The guidebook, created in partnership with PsychArmor Institute®, makes the business case for hiring veteran candidates. It outlines the critical role that HR professionals and hiring managers can play in the successful transition of veterans from military service to civilian employment and includes evidence-based guidelines and a list of resources for veteran and military hiring initiatives.
