Member Spotlight: Julie Doyle

Julie Doyle, SHRM-SCP, was working as an assistant restaurant manager years ago when the director of operations offered her some critical advice: “If you want to get promoted, train your replacement.”

That motivated her to focus not just on running the day-to-day business operations, but also on helping team members grow and develop.

The strategy paid off. Doyle worked her way up to regional director of several restaurants. She then grew interested in the impact HR can have on businesses and the people who work for them. She landed an HR job and attained an HR management degree.

“I can help the business succeed by helping the employees also succeed—it’s a win-win,” she says.

Doyle’s passion for developing people and advancing the HR profession also is evident in her volunteer roles. She has served as the president of the Greater Cincinnati Human Resources Association, which has more than 750 members, and chaired the 2018 Ohio SHRM HR Conference. For the past two years, she also served as the Ohio SHRM State Council director.

What’s your work philosophy?

We all work to provide for ourselves and our families. Therefore, lead with empathy and help others succeed. As business leaders, we should make decisions based on what’s good for the employees, the organization and the stakeholders, who could be clients or customers. If we make decisions that are good for all three, everybody wins.

What’s your favorite business book?

I have a few that had a tremendous impact on me. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Simon & Schuster, 2020) by Stephen R. Covey helped me learn more about active listening and develop as a leader.

What’s your greatest accomplishment to date?

I’m proud of the team that helped make my vision come to life when I was the chair of the 2018 Ohio SHRM HR Conference. It was a huge success thanks to their dedication, commitment and passion. The privilege to serve my HR community has been so rewarding, and I always get more back in return than I give.
