Webinar Recap: SHRM Certification 101

Over 1,000 people participated in a free one-hour webinar, "Advance Your Career with SHRM Certification," hosted by the SHRM Certification team last week. The first competency-based credentials for HR professionals, SHRM certification verifies and validates one's HR knowledge, skills and abilities as prescribed by the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK). The session was designed to guide those who are considering taking the exam during the upcoming Winter testing window (Dec. 1, 2020-Feb. 15, 2021), for which applications are currently being accepted.

Facilitated by SHRM's manager of certification relations, the webinar highlighted the SHRM certification process from start to finish. Topics included making the decision to take the exam, meeting eligibility requirements, filling out the application, taking the test, becoming certified and maintaining one's credential through recertification efforts. Participants learned how to determine the correct exam to take—the SHRM-CP or the SHRM-SCP—based on their professional background and relevant HR work experience.

The webinar also provided an overview of the new testing option: remote proctoring, which allows an examinee to test 24/7 from their home or another convenient, suitable location of their choice, monitored by a live proctor. In view of the current pandemic situation, this option is a timely alternative to taking the exam at an in-person testing center. The remote proctoring option should be considered by those who have limited or no ability to travel to a test center, who are (or who live with someone who is) at high risk for COVID-19 and wish to be safe, or who desire or require a flexible testing schedule.

Additional insights were shared to help individuals plan and prepare for their SHRM certification journey and build confidence, including study hints and useful test-taking tips.

Another webinar took place yesterday and featured certified professionals sharing their experiences using the SHRM Learning System to prepare for their exam. This session will be recapped in the next issue of the Update.
