Job Summary:

The Pharmacologist will study the actions of chemicals substances (including medicines) on tissues and physiological processes of animals and humans.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Trains, supervises and coordinates the work of laboratory technicians.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Devises and carries out experiments in vitro to determine how chemical substances act on individual cells and tissues to produce their effects.
  • Devises and carries out experiments with animals such as rats, guinea pigs, and mice, to determine effects of drugs and other substances on tissues and such functions as circulation, respiration, digestion, and other vital processes.
  • Studies how drugs are taken up by tissues and how concentrations of various substances in the body change over time.
  • Tests newly discovered and manufactured substances for safety and possible use as drugs.
  • Identifies potential toxicities of substances to determine if proposed clinical protocols in humans are reasonably safe.
  • Analyzes test results and prepares reports for presentation to government agencies and other organizations.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Education and Experience:

  • PhD degree in cellular and molecular pharmacology.
  • At least two years of research following completion of degree work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), and chemical hazards.
