SHRM Testifies at House Subcommittee Hearing on FLSA Modernization
On March 25, SHRM was represented by Paige Boughan, M.S., SHRM-SCP, legislative director for the Maryland SHRM State Council, at a hearing held by the House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections (part of House Committee on Education and the Workforce). The hearing, titled “The Future of Wage Laws: Assessing the FLSA’s Effectiveness, Challenges, and Opportunities,” focused on modernizing the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to better address the needs of today’s workforce.
At the hearing, SHRM emphasized to the members of the subcommittee that federal law must evolve to bridge the gap between how organizations assess their needs, find the right talent, and meet that talent where they work and thrive. But unfortunately, outdated laws such as the FLSA are holding back organizations and the American workforce, blocking U.S. workers from reaching our fullest potential.
To unlock the full potential of the American workforce, SHRM believes we must turn three essential keys: modernizing pivotal workplace policies, closing the workforce participation gap, and shaping the future of work. These action items are not just priorities — they are the levers that will open doors to innovation, economic growth, and a more dynamic, competitive workforce.
Forward-thinking changes to the FLSA will empower employers to design benefits and workplace policies that meet talent where they are — ensuring a dynamic, adaptable, and future-ready workforce, SHRM said.
SHRM and its members are ready to partner with the subcommittee and serve as the connective tissue in its work on these issues and other critical ones within its jurisdiction.
