SHRM HRAM Chapter Brings the Voice of HR Back to Nebraska Capitol
On April 15, the Human Resource Association of the Midlands (HRAM) hosted its 2025 Day Inside the District in Lincoln, Neb. — its first formal state-level advocacy event in 13 years. Nearly 50 HR professionals gathered at the Nebraska state Capitol to engage with lawmakers and share their insights on key workplace policy issues. As the only unicameral — and officially nonpartisan — state legislature in the country, Nebraska offers a uniquely direct and transparent forum for civic engagement. SHRM proudly applauds HRAM for revitalizing this important tradition and encourages other SHRM affiliates to consider organizing similar efforts.
Throughout the day, HRAM members met with Nebraska state senators and legislative staff to advocate for policies grounded in the realities of today’s workplace. These discussions centered on five legislative priorities:
- LB415 – Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act: Supported for clarifying paid sick leave requirements and aligning them with business operations.
- LB677 – Medical Cannabis Regulation: Supported for preserving employer flexibility in maintaining drug-free workplaces.
- LB258 – Wage and Hour Act Amendments: Opposed due to its discriminatory wage provisions for youth and its conflict with equal opportunity principles.
- LB532 – E-Verify Requirement: Supported for bringing consistency and efficiency to employment eligibility verification.
- LB136 – Garnishment Process Modernization: Supported for ensuring proper notice to employers and improving administrative processes.
HRAM President Bryn Reed, SHRM-SCP, reflected on the experience:
“It was so meaningful to meet with our state senators and connect with HR professionals from across the state. Days like this remind me of the power of collaboration and the importance of advocating for our profession.”
Advocacy at the state level plays a critical role in shaping the policies that directly affect workplaces. From paid leave and wages to hiring practices and compliance, many of the most consequential decisions for HR professionals are made in state legislatures. Events such as HRAM’s Day Inside the District empower HR leaders to educate lawmakers, share practical experience, and ensure that workforce policy reflects the needs of both employers and employees.
