About
Most military-to-career stories move in one direction — transitioning from service to civilian life. But for Michael Smith, his experiences have run concurrently for 18 years.
A Captain and Public Affairs Officer for the 189th Airlift Wing, Michael has served continuously in the Air National Guard since he enlisted in early 2000. Since 2008, he has worked at Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Ark., where he currently holds the HR manager position. And, at the intersection of both of his careers, he volunteers as the state director of the Arkansas SHRM State Council. Holding all three roles at the same time — and showing up well for each of them — is itself a demonstration of how sustained military service shapes a person.

Having enlisted in the Air Force while still in college — and completing a deployment to Kuwait prior to earning his undergraduate degree — spurred Michael’s penchant for taking on multiple roles early on. His experiences built strong resilience and mission-focus, and activated a deep belief that structure and accountability are key to success.
At Clinton National Airport, those instincts drove his leadership on a meaningful overhaul of HR operations. Drawing on his military experience in management and logistics, Michael led the implementation of a cloud-based HRIS system that replaced outdated paper processes, streamlined hiring and onboarding, reduced time-to-fill for critical positions, and lowered overall hiring costs. He also developed a structured onboarding program modeled after military training frameworks, improving new hire retention and helping employees feel prepared and connected from day one. The airport strives to be their region’s employer of choice, which is a direct affirmation of the workforce infrastructure Michael has built.
His influence extends across the state through his leadership of the Arkansas SHRM State Council, where he has implemented financial controls that expanded the organization's capacity to offer professional development and support initiatives for HR professionals statewide. "Michael doesn't just manage human resources, he elevates it. His work ethic and commitment set the standard for what it truly means to lead both in and out of uniform," said Glenda Caton, State Director Elect for Arkansas SHRM.
For the thousands of Guard and Reserve members who pursue active service alongside civilian careers, having an advocate inside HR who understands their reality firsthand makes a difference. Today, Michael continues to build his network of veterans working in HR to exchange best practices on transitioning to civilian life, and how to best balance both career and service for fellow Guard and Reserve members. His story is an inspirational reminder of what’s possible when an organization actively supports, encourages and recognizes military experience as a strength.
