SHRM Foundation Nominated for Military Community Nonprofit Leadership Award

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The SHRM Foundation was selected as a Military Community Nonprofit Leadership Award finalist. Hosted by Hiring Our Heroes, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Military Community Nonprofit Leadership Award is presented to a veteran- or military spouse-focused nonprofit with a demonstrated commitment to supporting veteran and military spouse employment and economic opportunity. The SHRM Foundation was recognized for its work with the veteran and military spouse community, a pillar in the SHRM Foundation's untapped pools of talent, to create inclusive, diverse workspaces. The SHRM Foundation offers a Veterans at Work certificate program to help the HR community source, hire and retain members of the military community in the workforce. A representative for the SHRM Foundation attended the Hire Our Heroes' 12th annual Lee Anderson Awards Gala last night, November 9, where the winner was announced.

"As Veterans Day approaches, it gives us time to pause and reflect on all of the efforts, sacrifice and commitment undertaken by the veteran community," said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). "One of SHRM's initiatives is to create spaces for HR professionals to identify leaders to make an impact on the workplace; military spouses and veterans are ideal candidates to take up this mantle."

The Military Community Nonprofit Leadership award, launched 10 years ago, recognizes organizations taking a holistic approach to serve veterans and military spouses. Finalists undertook initiatives critical to support positive economic outcomes such as mental health/wellness, bridging the civilian-military divide, education, and military community empowerment efforts. The award is hosted by Hiring Our Heroes, a 501(c)3 organization under the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Launched in March 2011, the organization is an initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment.

"We're proud of all the work the SHRM Foundation has done to bridge the gap between the HR profession and the military community," said Wendi Safstrom, president of the SHRM Foundation. "It's initiatives like the Veterans at Work program and our Veterans Ambassador program that build an atmosphere of inclusion and prosperity for this untapped pool of talent."

Launched four years ago, the Veterans at Work certificate program has led 18,000 HR professionals to help military community members find gainful employment in the private sector. Additionally, through SHRM Foundation training, there have been over 300 ambassadors added into the workplace. These ambassadors are used as force multipliers to bring education and awareness to their workplaces and communities.  The SHRM Foundation works to mobilize the power of HR for social change through diverse talent hiring, inclusive workplace building and workplace mental health prioritization.
