Job Summary:
Under the direction of a Medical/Technical Director or general manager, the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor oversees the activities of the clinical laboratory and ensures its smooth and efficient functioning.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the operation of the department with up to four full-time clinical technicians.
- May supervise one phlebotomist.
- Trains staff and assigns/checks work of subordinates.
- Performs staff-related functions (i.e., hiring, firing, disciplining, training, problems, etc.).
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs advanced or specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques. May duplicate work of others to confirm test results. Re-evaluates methodology, makes recommended changes, and assists in test interpretation. Determines if further testing should be done on blood samples or if tests should be repeated.
- Initiates quality-control measures and monitors work quality for compliance with laboratory standards. Completes special projects like surveys, statistical reports, studies, and research.
- Maintains records for federal, state and appropriate license accreditation. Monitors adherence to safety regulations.
- Purchases supplies for the laboratory. Recommends procurement of new laboratory equipment and monitors maintenance/repair needs of existing equipment.
- May write department reports. May assist in budget planning and cost analysis.
- May cooperate with counterpart hospitals and other institutions for exchange of samples and information.
- Performs other duties as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to organize and coordinate diverse activities.
- Demonstrated supervisory ability.
- Familiarity with state and federal regulations.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in a life science or equivalent.
- ASCP or HEW certification.
- Four to six years of experience in a laboratory environment with similar functions.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
