Job Summary:
The Clinical Technician II, under the general supervision of a clinical laboratory supervisor, performs testing procedures on patient blood samples.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- May assist in training new employees in the work of the laboratory.
- May instruct medical students from area hospitals in the work of the laboratory.
- Fills in for other employees or the supervisor when necessary.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs various testing procedures as assigned (e.g., blood grouping laboratoryantibody screening; ABO and RH typing; complete RBC typingsoriginals; serum protein laboratoryrunning analyzer; immunofixation plates). May perform phlebotomy.
- Prepares all necessary test materials; records and reports test results to laboratories or doctors (may write reports and discuss results with doctors). Performs specialized assignments like quality control and/or working on problem cases.
- Maintains laboratory equipment (cleaning, calibrating, repairing) and completes paperwork. May perform office or clerical duties when necessary (e.g., filing, billing, answering the telephone, data entry related to reporting test results).
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge and ability to perform most or all tests in the laboratory.
- Overall knowledge of work performed in the laboratory.
- Ability to set priorities.
- Ability to handle more advanced functions of the laboratory.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent
- ASCP or HEW certification.
- Minimum of two years of experience as a clinical laboratory technician.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer and standing in a lab.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
