NYC Council Investigation Finds Employers of All Industries Complying with Landmark Salary Transparency Law
A new report from the New York City Council (NYC Council), New York City Strives for Pay Equity, examines employer compliance with the city’s Salary Transparency Law, as well as enforcement efforts by the NYC Commission on Human Rights (CCHR). The law, in effect since November 2022, requires employers to include salary ranges in job postings.
The NYC Council’s analysis found that most employers are complying with the law, but some job postings on platforms such as Indeed and Google for Jobs do not display salary information due to how listings are aggregated. The report also notes that while CCHR has taken enforcement actions, the outcomes have not been made public.
The report’s recommendations include:
- Engaging job search platforms to address missing salary information.
- Publicizing enforcement actions where feasible.
- Evaluating funding and staffing levels for CCHR.
- Strengthening coordination between CCHR and other agencies.
As salary transparency requirements continue to evolve, the findings provide insights into implementation and enforcement considerations.
