Job Summary:
The Pollution Control Technician will conduct laboratory and field tests to obtain data requested by environmental engineering and scientific staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conducts laboratory and field tests according to prescribed standards for the collection of data related to pollution control.
- Collects air samples and meteorological data for evaluation of atmospheric pollutants.
- Collects water samples from a variety of sources; samples may include raw, semi-processed or processed water, and industrial wastewater.
- Collects silt, mud, and soil samples for evaluation of chemical composition and pollutants.
- Arranges samples for testing, records data, and prepares summaries and charts for review.
- Conducts bacteriological tests pertaining to environmental or pollution control activity research.
- Operates and maintains gas and fluid flow systems, chemical reactor systems, mechanical equipment, and other testing instrumentation.
- Facilitates the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and other waste.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to operate pH meter, chemical autoclaves, spectrophotometers, analytical instrumentation, centrifuges, microscopes, and other chemical laboratory equipment.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Associates degree in Environmental and Pollution Control or similar scientific field required.
- HAZWOPER trainer certification preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to travel to various locations in all types of outdoor weather conditions to collect field samples and data.
- Must be able to negotiate rough terrain and wetland conditions to make field observations, and collect data and samples.
