Job Summary:
The State Climatologist studies and collects climate data to identify trends and predict changes that could affect the health and well-being of the future population.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Oversees collection and storage of weather data in the state; data will include temperature, wind, and amount and types of precipitation.
- Conducts global monitoring studies to compile data regarding ozone depletion, the arctic surface water (ASW), the arctic frontal zone (AFZ), and other environmental characteristics.
- Coordinates data from geographic information systems (GIS) with information from global positioning systems (GPS).
- Researches and identifies weather conditions from specific historical dates or periods for various purposes including legal cases or research studies.
- Assists with the preparation of long-range climate projections and related materials.
- Coordinates with scientists in other fields to provide current information and developments in climatology.
- Prepares and distributes reports and papers to other climatologists and meteorologists.
- Facilitates distribution and sharing of climatology information to assist with international climatology studies.
- Maintains knowledge of developments and studies in the field.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Expert understanding of GIS software applications.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software to prepare data reports and research projects.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Computer Science, Meteorology, or related field required; Masters Degree preferred.
- At least five years of related experience managing GIS data.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
