Job Summary:

The State Climatologist studies and collects climate data to identify trends and predict changes that could affect the health and well-being of the future population.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• None.

Duties/ Responsibilities:

• Oversees collection and storage of weather data in the state; data will include temperature, wind, and amount and types of precipitation.
• Conducts global monitoring studies to compile data regarding ozone depletion, the arctic surface water (ASW), the arctic frontal zone (AFZ), and other environmental characteristics.
• Coordinates data from geographic information systems (GIS) with information from global positioning systems (GPS).
• Researches and identifies weather conditions from specific historical dates or periods for various purposes including legal cases or research studies.
• Assists with the preparation of long-range climate projections and related materials.
• Coordinates with scientists in other fields to provide current information and developments in climatology.
• Prepares and distributes reports and papers to other climatologists and meteorologists.
• Facilitates distribution and sharing of climatology information to assist with international climatology studies.
• Maintains knowledge of developments and studies in the field.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Computer Science, Meteorology, or related field required; Masters Degree preferred.
• At least five years of related experience managing GIS data.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
