The Court Reporter will transcribe verbatim records for a variety of legal proceedings.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Attends court sessions and other legal proceedings and uses stenography, voice recording tools, and computers to create verbatim transcriptions of legal proceedings.
- Transcribes multiple speakers simultaneously.
- Reads back testimony as requested by court officials.
- Transfers transcription of proceedings to the official record and provides copies to appropriate parties.
- Ensures accurate transcription by double-checking record against recordings.
- Formats official records in accordance with applicable court requirements.
- Organizes records as directed by judges or lawyers.
- Develops and maintains up-to-date index of notes; coordinates records with presiding court clerk as requested.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to transcribe 225 words per minute.
- Ability to efficiently use stenography, voice recording devices, and/or computer software for the transcription of proceedings.
- Excellent concentration, writing, and listening skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain composure and calm regardless of proceedings.
- Basic understanding of legal, medical, and other technical terminology required in court proceedings.
- Basic understanding of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from accredited court reporting school or college/university with court reporting curriculum required.
- Licensure or professional certification from National Court Reporters Association, National Verbatim Reporters Association, or similar agency required.
- Appropriate state license required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working with transcription equipment, computers, and other electronic devices.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
