The Hazardous Materials Investigation Specialist will perform tasks necessary to ensure safety compliance in the handling, storage, and/or transport of hazardous materials.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Ensures and promotes compliance with federal and state safety laws, standards, and regulations applicable to hazardous materials, particularly by conducting regular inspections and investigations of assigned sites, projects, activities, or incidents.
- Collects and tests samples using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Provides guidance and recommendations of methods to correct violations, eliminate hazards, improve safety, and ensure future compliance with applicable hazardous materials regulations.
- Issues warnings and citations to employees and/or company officials responsible for violations discovered.
- Minimizes the occurrence and intensity of violations, spills, and accidents by providing education and training on acceptable hazardous materials management practices.
- Prepares for agency enforcement actions by obtaining and developing case documentation and inspection reports.
- Provides technical assistance to state and local organizations as needed.
- Participates in special task forces, project management, and incident response teams related to hazardous materials safety and management.
- Maintains current knowledge and expertise by actively participating in training on principles, methods, and techniques related to hazardous material management.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm, think clearly, and act professionally in extremely stressful situations that may involve public relations duties.
- Thorough understanding of all state and federal laws and regulations related to hazardous materials transportation and management.
- Thorough understanding of methods, procedures, and techniques needed to collect and test materials and analyze situations.
- Ability to conduct research and analysis and to provide evidence-based recommendations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree with coursework in sciences, engineering, or related field required.
- Completion of on-the-job training on technical, procedural, and investigative protocols.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to traverse a variety of terrains in all conditions and environments.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
- Will come into contact with hazardous materials and wastes in a variety of industrial and chemically contaminated sites.
- Must be able to work at heights over ten feet.
