Sanitarian Administrator




Job Summary:

The Sanitarian Administrator will supervise lower-level sanitarian inspectors in carrying out their assigned duties as part of an environmental health program and will communicate with business and community groups to enlist their support for the public health code.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Develops and supervises the inspection procedures of inspectors checking sanitary conditions, equipment and operating procedures of grocery stores, dairy plants, restaurants, health care facilities, schools, and other sites in accordance with the city health code.
  • Oversees recruitment, in-house training, assignment of duties, and scheduling of lower-level sanitarians.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develops procedures and supervises lower-level sanitarians in the following programs: mosquito control and testing; rabies control and testing, and; vector control.
  • Develops brochures, manuals and training programs to promote public awareness and support for the public health program in general. Prepares public education programs relating to the dangers of lead paint exposure and oversees medical treatment and recordkeeping functions.
  • Coordinates activities of the city public health department with programs being carried out at the state and federal level. Participates in gathering statistical data and preparing technical reports on activities for regional planning and for other government and private agencies.
  • Works with the controller's office to prepare budgets and oversees the proper financial administration of available funds.
  • Provides technical assistance to the legal department for court actions and participates in legal proceedings to enforce the public health code.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of regulations, principles, and techniques relating to environmental and public health.
  • Knowledge of bacteriology and laboratory practice related to sanitation, epidemiology, and public health.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to communicate effectively and to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, businesses, community groups, and the public.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree major course work in environmental, agricultural, life or physical science, dairy or food technology, or a combined major in these subjects required.
  • Four years of experience in environmental health work including two years in a supervisory capacity.
  • A Master's degree with major course work in one of the areas of environmental health may be substituted for one year of required nonsupervisory experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May require long periods of standing, reaching, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
