Job Summary:
The State Director of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) leads and oversees the states OSH program, enforcing and providing interpretive guidance on OSH laws, regulations, and standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Hires and trains OSH staff.
- Oversees the daily workflow and schedules of the OSH department and staff.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
- Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Ensures, through enforcement, compliance with state and federal OSH standards and regulations at employer premises.
- Leads and directs high-profile or policy-setting cases; visits scenes of serious incident cases or catastrophes as practical.
- Participates in federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard development, ensuring that federal standards are reviewed, adopted, and finalized as required by applicable administrative procedures laws.
- Leads the OSH consultation branch, providing information and assistance to employers, employees, unions, and the general public.
- Offers technical assistance and subject matter expertise to legislative committees on safety and health.
- Serves as a liaison to employer groups, unions, and individual employees and legislative committees on safety and health; makes and receives recommendations on policy.
- Acts as a spokesperson on state safety and health issues.
- Collaborates and coordinates with state Department of Health to set priorities and implement policy related to industrial hygiene testing.
- Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with federal agency counterparts to facilitate receiving the maximum federal funding of and support for the state OSHA plan.
- Promotes statewide safety and health efforts by supporting and facilitating positive public relations coverage including marketing and informational campaigns and materials.
- Prepares and presents annual budget for the department; implements budget and monitors spending.
- Actively participates in staff meetings led by the governor and the executive state administrator.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety and Health or Business required. Masters degree preferred.
- Active status as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or comparable certification required.
- At least ten years of experience in the OSH field required with senior-level management experience highly preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Frequent travel required.
- May require the ability to enter and traverse accident sites.
