Purpose/Objective
[Company Name] provides nonexempt employees with the opportunity to make up work time that is missed due to personal obligations. Employees who need to be absent from work as a result of personal obligations may submit a written request to make up missed work time, provided they satisfy the eligibility requirements and follow the procedures outlined below.
Eligibility
Nonexempt employees are eligible for make-up time if they obtain prior approval from their supervisors of a written request [submitted on a company form] for make-up time. The company reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to deny a request for make-up time based on the business needs of the company.
Employees’ use of make-up time under this policy is completely voluntary. The company does not encourage, solicit or require employees to request or use make-up time.
Procedures
Employees requesting make-up time under this policy must comply with the following procedures:
The employee must submit a written request [on a company form] [reasonably in advance of/within 24 hours of] for the requested time off and indicate what day and time he or she wishes to be absent from work and what day(s) and time(s) the employee wishes to make up the missed time.
The employee must obtain prior written authorization from [his or her supervisor/human resources/other title] of his or her request, including an approved schedule for the make-up time.
The make-up time must be worked (or made up) in the same workweek when the scheduled time was missed or taken off. Additionally, the scheduled make-up time must not cause the employee’s total scheduled work time to exceed 11 hours in any workday or 40 hours in the relevant workweek. The company’s workweek begins [day] at [time] and ends [day] at [time].
If an employee takes the requested time off but is unable to work the scheduled make-up time, the missed work time will generally be unpaid.
If an employee works the scheduled make-up time before taking the requested time off, the employee will generally be required to take the time off, even if he or she no longer needs the time off.
Time that is made up under this policy will be compensated at the employee’s regular, straight-time rate of pay. Apart from the approved and scheduled make-up time under this policy, the regular rules for paying overtime wages will apply.
