ALEXANDRIA, Va. — SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management) President & CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. released the following statement on the recent mass shootings in California.
"It is with a heavy heart that I find myself speaking about workplace violence. Nineteen people lost their lives going about their day-to-day business this past weekend and on Monday. The trauma of these tragedies will have lasting effects in communities across California and the nation. There is no place for workplace violence. As HR professionals, we must play our part in addressing this.
We at SHRM have been focused on mental health and well-being in the workplace. It is our responsibility to reinforce the need for empathy, civility and understanding in our lives and at our jobs for all employees to feel safe. HR professionals and managers can do more to be intentional about our approach, to mitigate the risk and take a zero-tolerance approach to violent behavior. There should be no forms of aggression. If you see something amiss, please say something. Business leaders need to speak with employees about how to deal with workplace violence, particularly mass shootings."
