About The Program
The J-1 Exchange Visitor visa is a temporary, non-immigrant visa, established in 1961 by the U.S. Department of State, is a key public diplomacy initiative aimed at promoting cultural understanding and educational exchange. Known as the BridgeUSA program, it enables foreign nationals to enhance their careers through internships, research and development, workforce development, training, and knowledge-sharing programs in the U.S. The goal is to foster mutual understanding and collaboration across cultures. SHRM is a designated sponsor for international Research Scholars, Short-Term Scholars, Specialists, Interns and Trainees seeking career development opportunities in the U.S. and for organizations looking to transform their business with international talent.
Research Scholars are international experts in a specific field whose main objective in the U.S. is to engage in research, observe, give lectures, or provide consultation related to projects at U.S. research institutions, corporate research centers, or academic institutions.
Short-Term Scholars visit the U.S. for a brief period to lecture, observe, consult, provide training, or showcase specialized skills at research institutions, museums, libraries, accredited colleges and universities, or similar establishments. Their stay is capped at a maximum of 6 months.
J-1 Exchange Specialists are professionals with specialized knowledge or skills who travel to the United States to observe, consult, or demonstrate expertise for up to 12 months.
Trainees are professionals who either possess a degree or certificate from a non-U.S. postsecondary academic institution and have at least 1 year of prior related work experience in their occupational field outside the U.S. OR have at least 5 years of work experience outside the United States in the occupational field in which they are seeking training.
The J-1 Intern visa is designed for students and recent graduates from foreign universities who wish to pursue an internship in the U.S., allowing them to gain hands-on experience in their field of study for up to 12 months.
Processing times are contingent upon receipt of a complete application packet with all required supporting materials in order.
