Environmental Health Specialist




Job Summary:

The Environmental Health Specialist will conduct inspections of assigned facilities and settings to ensure applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations are being met.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conducts scheduled and surprise inspections of assigned facilities and settings, which may include restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, commercial and industrial settings, recreational areas, and other settings with applicable safety and health requirements.
  • Enforces applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations including food handling regulations, sanitation regulations, and regulations controlling the proper handling of biological waste, harmful pollutants, and other contaminants.
  • Monitors air and water quality.
  • Monitors the presence of and identifies hazardous pollutants that may pose a threat to public health and environments.
  • Investigates food poisoning and similar community health outbreaks to determine probable origins, causes, and available mitigating or corrective actions.
  • Inspects public places and observes changes in the environment.
  • Implements environmental protection regulations and health standards for business, public, and residential areas.
  • Drafts inspection reports to document inspection findings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and policies.
  • Proficiency with technology and equipment used in environmental inspections.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Safety, Biology, Chemistry, or related field required.
  • One to three years of related experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
