AFL-CIO Launches Workers First Initiative on AI
On Oct. 15, the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the U.S., representing nearly 15 million workers across 63 unions, officially launched its Workers First Initiative on AI. This initiative is the first comprehensive labor movement effort to establish principles for the use of artificial intelligence in workplaces. Its purpose is to provide a framework for employers and policymakers to implement AI technologies in ways that protect workers’ rights while supporting organizational efficiency.
The initiative emphasizes preventing AI-powered surveillance and unjust layoffs, ensuring that workplaces maintain human oversight over employment decisions. It calls for strong enforcement of labor protections to safeguard employees from AI systems that could be used to monitor or penalize them unfairly. In addition, the AFL-CIO highlights the importance of involving workers in AI development and deployment, advocating transparency in data collection and human review of automated decision-making processes. The initiative also calls for retraining and upskilling programs to prepare employees for evolving roles impacted by AI adoption, ensuring that technological change does not leave workers behind.
A particular focus of the initiative is transparency in government-funded AI systems. By requiring accountability measures, the AFL-CIO aims to protect public employees and contractors from unfair practices while setting a model for private-sector organizations. The launch comes amid growing national attention to AI’s potential impacts on employment, worker privacy, and workplace fairness. Through this initiative, the AFL-CIO positions itself as a leading voice advocating for a worker-centered approach to AI, seeking to balance technological advancement with protection and empowerment of the American workforce.
By framing AI adoption within a labor rights context, the initiative provides HR professionals, policymakers, and employers with guidance on integrating emerging technologies while maintaining compliance, fairness, and ethical standards in workforce management. It underscores the importance of proactive planning, transparency, and worker involvement in shaping AI-driven workplaces.
