Job Summary:
The Head Athletic Coach will direct and oversee a specific athletic program in the school, encouraging good sportsmanship and athletic distinction.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- In conjunction with the athletic director, assigns and promotes assistant coaches based on experience and performance.
- Coordinates the work of assistant coaches.
- Oversees the schedules and performance of team support staff such as trainers and therapists.
- Assists the athletic director in providing performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the current team and develops strategies based on these findings.
- Sets goals for the athletic team that may include team and individual player achievements and victories; directs and motivates staff and players toward achievement of such goals.
- Prepares game plans in collaboration with other team coaches for each game, meet, match, or competition.
- Gathers available information on competitors performance records, abilities, play styles, and game strategies, then develops appropriate game strategies to meet the challenge of those competitors.
- Provides instruction to team members before, during, and after an event in an effort to win games, meets, matches, or other competitions.
- Schedules and coordinates practice schedules and procedures.
- Attends all team events, ensuring proper behavior by team and coaches.
- Actively participates in all faculty and coaching meetings.
- Maintains files documenting individual player performance, academic status, and eligibility requirements.
- Ensures all necessary physical exams, parental consent forms, waivers, and insurance forms are accurately completed and filed to fulfill all local, district, and other governing body rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the applicable team sport.
- Thorough understanding of the rules and regulations associated with student athletes and coaches in the sport.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and managerial skills.
- Ability to appropriately communicate with athletes and coaches.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or related field required.
- Applicable education certification and/or licensure required.
- At least three years of coaching experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods standing and moving during practices, games, meets, matches, and other competitions.
- Must be able to watch and analyze video of opposing teams.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
