To all newly certified SHRM-CPs and SHRM-SCPs: You’ve earned your certification, and your recertification cycle starts now! Welcome! Do you have questions about recertifying your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP? The SHRM Certification Team has answers!
Send your questions to recertification@shrm.org and read below for some frequently asked recertification questions.
Q: Can I get recertification credits for being a member of an HR association?
A: SHRM recognizes the value of joining the wider community of HR professionals. As an individual member of an eligible national or international association whose primary focus is HR, you can earn three professional development credits (PDCs) per year in the Advance Your Profession category.
Examples of eligible groups include:
- SHRM (national-level organization)
- World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA)
- Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Canada (CPHR)
- Institute for Human Resource Professionals Singapore (IHRP)
- Association for Talent Development (ATD)
Credit is earned after you complete a full year of membership in the association. You can enter your three PDCs into your account manually; for national SHRM membership, your three PDCs are entered automatically.
Q: What can I do to earn more than three PDCs per year for association membership?
A: Serving as a leader, officer, or member of a board, committee, council or panel of SHRM or a SHRM affiliate may be considered a volunteer activity that qualifies for additional credits toward recertification. Consult the SHRM Recertification Requirements Handbook, which provides details on qualifying activities and specifies the number of PDCs allocated for each.
Q: My company has a corporate membership in an HR association. Do I get PDCs if I am on the staff of the HR department?
A: No. Credit is awarded only for an individual membership in an eligible national or international organization.
Q: I belong to the local chapter of one HR association, the state chapter of another, and also to a regional SHRM affiliate. Do I get PDCs for those memberships?
A: No. Credit is awarded only for an individual membership in an eligible national or international organization.
