The Driving Instructor will teach students to operate an automobile safely and in accordance with applicable motor vehicle laws.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees students as they learn to safely and properly operate an automobile.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Instructs students in the skills needed to operate a vehicle.
- Rides along with student drivers using a dual control car; evaluates how well the student can operate a vehicle.
- Explains safe steering, braking, and turning techniques; covers defensive driving techniques.
- Demonstrates how to handle skids and other driving emergencies.
- Teaches students to park a standard-sized vehicle using a variety of different parking methods.
- Provides instruction on how to safely operate an automobile in city traffic, highway driving, residential, and rural driving.
- Teaches students the states motor vehicle laws, including speed limits, driver rights of way, pedestrian rights, accident reporting, and insurance regulations.
- Familiarizes students with highway markings, signs, and signals.
- Ensures students are familiar with the controls and gauges on an automobile.
- Introduces basic concepts of vehicle maintenance.
- Administers tests and quizzes related to materials covered in class.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of motor vehicle laws and vehicle operation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to teach students the principles of operating an automobile.
- Ability to be patient and remain calm when riding with a student driver.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two years of related experience.
- Valid drivers license and clean driving record.
- Law enforcement or teaching background desirable.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of riding in a vehicle.
- Physical ability to operate an automobile.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
