Job Summary:
The House Physician will provide consultation and acute and urgent care to in-patients at the request of attending physicians.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provides in-house consultations for hospital patients when requested by the attending physicians. Provides ICU-CCU triage with the approval of the attending physician, Chief of Service, or ICU-CCU Committee Chairperson. Prescreens cases requiring review by the Department of Medicine Quality Assurance Committee.
- Takes charge of "code" situations and initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation and advanced cardiac life support.
- Pronounces deaths as requested by the attending physician.
- Inserts difficult IVs, subclavian (central) lines, and Swanz-Ganz catheters as requested by the attending physician.
- Unofficially interprets EKGs and chest and abdominal X-rays as requested by the attending physician.
- Provides medical coverage for the employee health clinic.
- Expedites patient discharges by contacting the attending physician who has already indicated that patients may be ready for discharge.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Current certification in CPR.
- Interest and expertise in medical administrative activities.
- Effective interpersonal skills, communication skills, and management skills.
Education and Experience:
- Current license to practice medicine in the state.
- Board-certified or board-eligible in internal medicine, surgery, or emergency medicine.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- May require prolonged periods of standing, bending and walking.
- Must be able to lift more than 50 pounds at times.
